Verse Novels Sequels, Trilogies and Series

When it comes to writing for young readers it seems that no one writes just one book anymore. That’s one of the reasons I love verse novels for young readers – they are often stand-alones adrift in a sea of sequels, trilogies and series.

That said, some of my favorite verse novels for parts of sets, so I thought I’d highlight some here.

Of course I’ll start with the incomparable Ellen Hopkins. Her verse novels CRANK, GLASS and FALLOUT form a trilogy about the long ranging effects of meth addiction.  SMOKE is the sequel to her heartrending BURNED. And the adult TRIANGLES is a companion to the YA TILT.

Sonya Sones’s books WHAT MY MOTHER DOESN’T KNOW and WHAT MY GIRLFRIEND DOESN’T KNOW form a nice little set.

Australian verse novelist Stephen Herrick’s KISSING ANNABEL  was once two novels called Love, Ghosts, and Facial Hair and A Place Like This Now it’s published in one volume.

One of my favorites for younger readers, SHAKESPEARE BATS CLEAN-UP by Ron Koertge was followed up by SHAKESPEARE MAKES THE PLAYOFFS.

Two gorgeous books that make a great choice for your first verse novel, or for verse novels for very young or struggling readers: LOVE THAT DOG and HATE THAT CAT by Sharon Creech.

Finally I can’t help but mention my book AUDACIOUS will be followed by a sequel, CAPRICIOUS to be published in 2014.
